Best HCC Fielder - Full List of Responses

Best fielders...

Mark Shepherd (Potters Bar CC):

Either of the Leather’s - patrol square boundaries around the county and like a pair of whippets.

Richard Cordingley:

Safest hands = Cliff (has he ever dropped anything?); Best ground fielder = Rob Darby (questionable catching, though…). George Pavey worth a strong mention too, as well as Ben Frazer and Michael Bailey.

Jamie Riddle:

2 blokes for me as they have pulled out the most amazing double act I have ever witnessed at Met Police Bushey. Ben Currie and George Pavey.

Hesh Abeywickrema:

Adam Carlson.

Max Lawrance:

Gonna have to say Connor Ives. Seen some blinders from him in my time.

Connor Ives (in response to Max Lawrance):

I can’t tell if you’re being serious.

Rob Slater:

Definitely not the bloke in the photo.

(Ben Orchard, that is)

Ben Orchard (in response to Rob Slater):

Absolutely shafted here. Best slip fielder to have never fielded there.

Paul Williams (in response to Rob Slater):

Rob Slater, I think I remember taking you to hospital after you tried to catch one with your face in the gulley.

Paul Williams:

Cliff Cavener is the best catcher I’ve seen. There have been better ground fielders but all around I’d give it to Cliff.

Cliff Cavener:

Didn’t someone in your list drop someone in single figures who then went on to make 151, ouch.

(Rob Darby dropped Chris Sketchley…)

Jim Riddle:

Cliff as good as any, especially catching, wherever he fielded. Hugh has now taken over from his father.

Chris Thompson:

Back in the day, I would say Tim Albery, Spike and Cliffy. Most recently, Hugh has taken some absolute blinders.

Will Ray:

Best hands - Michael Bailey, not sure I ever saw him drop one.
Best arm - Richard Leather & James Leather.
Biggest arm - Rob Slater.
Best ground fielder - Probably Adam Carlson or Hugh Cavener.
Best all-round fielder - Rich Cordingley would be right up there but I’m going with Chris Cook.

Steve Benford:

Rob Darby was sadly a gun fielder but doesn’t get my vote for the year I was 1s keeper and he threw everything at my ankles on purpose. Jamie Riddle was also excellent for a couple of years before he got too massive. Ratty an honourable mention but because catches win matches my vote goes to Cliff Cavener.

Stuart McIntyre:

Delon Reddy. There are times when you would think there’s no point chasing after the ball he would manage to catch up to it.

Richard Eaton (in response to Stuart McIntyre):

I agree, for his never say die attitude even if it’s a guaranteed 4, I reckon Delon Reddy.

Delon Reddy (in response to Richard Eaton):

My motto is never give up a chase unless the ball is over the boundary. I’d rather let a batsman run 4 and work for the runs than just handing it out to him. Nobody gives me Stu Mcdaddy easy runs.

Ben Currie:

Ricky Ketteridge or Richard Cordingley.

Mark Everett:

Giles Buchanan, before his knees went... electric quick over the ground, great hands and strong arm.

Stuart Cradock:

David Ottley is the best fielder I have ever seen represent Hertford. He was a very athletic and extremely agile fielder for a tall man. He covered a lot of ground when patrolling the covers and little got past him. He had a safe pair of hands and was very accurate when throwing the ball in. His infectious enthusiasm in the field rubbed off on others.

David Williams:

Very difficult this one. In the covers Mike Watson and David Ottley stand out from the 70s/80s. Phil Noble in the same period was excellent fielding short on the leg side. Cliff Cavener was an excellent all round fielder and there have been many safe pairs of hands, most notably Eric Riddle, Cliff again and Chris Thompson who once took 6 outfield catches at Langleybury. However I am going to plump for Stuart Cradock whose slip catching was outstanding - 231 1st XI victims, mostly at slip, in 368 matches.

Rob Darby:

Couldn’t split Fraze or Cliffy for catching, you could always rely on them to take the screamers! John Rixon also had the best arm ever!

Simon Bartlett:

I reckon it was me with that one handed left hand catch to get us up the league tier at the last game of the year in 1997. I had a blinder lol.

Tally Up:

Cliff Cavener - 5
Hugh Cavener - 2
Delon Reddy - 2
Ben Frazer - 1
David Ottley - 1
Stuart Cradock - 1
George Pavey - 1
Tim Albery - 1
Rob Darby - 1
Richard Cordingley - 1
Simon Watson - 1
Richard and James Leather - 1
Chris Cook - 1
Adam Carlson - 1
Ricky Ketteridge - 1
Giles Buchanan - 1
Connor Ives - 1
Simon Bartlett - 1 (voted for by himself)
