After losing yet another toss Hertford were put into bat. Starting well openers Rob McCarroll and Rob Wood played some glorious cover drives and were looking comfortable against the new ball. Clifton knowing the home conditions then took pace off the ball and this slowed the rate right down.
With stump-to-stump bowling and some helpful movement off the service Hertford were reduced to 65-4. Ben Gethin Golder and Adam Marnoch batted sensibly against some tricky bowling and waited for the bad balls taking the score up to 120 before Adam perished. Some late order runs gave Hertford a score of 164, below par by 15-20 but defendable on a slowing wicket.
Thommo and Tony opened and bowled beautifully, hitting a lovely line and length giving nothing away and building pressure from both ends leading to a breakthrough with a good catch from Adam Marnoch. If grids could catch as well more wickets would have tumbled... needless to say both Tony, skipper and Grids himself were not best pleased. At drinks Clifton were 45-4, well behind the rate. A small fight back from Clifton was broken with two run outs the first of which came from a drop from Codd and the second indicate that we are well and truly in Barbecue season! From then on Clifton were never really with the rate and although there was the occasional boundary Clifton fell short. A vital win for the 3’s. Mentions in the game for brad Dawson 4-26 from 9 overs and both Tony and Thommo for such tight bowling. Not to forget the runs from Golder and Marnoch to give the side a score.
Next week it’s a home game against Ickleford who we should have beaten in the reverse fixture and are also down the bottom of the table a big performance required.
