Hertford II lose season opener against Broxborne II

Hertford won the toss and chose to bat on beautiful green wet one. Who needs covers in April…

Out strolled George Pavey and Jamie Riddle, ready to start what one hopes to be a devastating opening partnership for the upcoming season. It took a good few overs getting used to a seaming Hertford wicket, with George Pavey thinking he was out there to give second slip catching practice. It was a good job second slip didn’t know how to spell “catch”. After some fine strokes Riddle fell for 14 after top edging a short ball straight to the wicket keeper (what a great 14 it was though). Jeff Hurrell came to the crease and after playing and missing at his first 10 balls he soon settled in. Playing some lovely strokes and unfortunately getting caught on 24. Alex Cooper was next to the crease and after two balls was back in the club house due to leaving one of the straightest balls I have seen for many a year (LBW).

Pavey was somehow still in the middle and managed to reach 37 off 20 overs, which for him is a very good strike rate. However, he was still at the crease and we needed him to stay there after Tom Orchard got stumped for 10 runs. Pavey reached his 50 and went on to make 71 before getting bowled by a peach of a ball from one of Broxborne’s youngsters. Marnoch and Max occupied the crease before max fell for 6 and then Dan Orchard for 4 in quick succession. David Benham thought he was in a competition with Coops so decided to play French cricket in front of his stumps but leave his bat above his head first ball (LBW). Marnoch reached 25* with some occasional attacking shots whilst also managing to run out 2 of the young guns along the way, Noah Osborne and Jonny Underdown respectively. Hertford finished on 167 off 40 overs, which they believed was defendable with some early wickets.

Broxborne got off to a quick start due to some early season looseners from Marnoch and Benham. However they soon found their rhythm, managing to tie them down with Marnoch snicking off Harvey for 17. With a good supporting spell from Benham, Marnoch was able to take his second victim (Wilkins) bowled for 21. Ferguson and Humphries then took control of the game, keeping the scoreboard ticking and waiting for Marnoch’s dangerous spell to come to a halt. However, a moment of madness from Humphries (20) saw him take a quick single to the arm of Benham, that his partner was having none of. Benham whizzed the ball in to the stumps and Pavey finished the job off. Two balls later Marnoch sent Allen back to the clubhouse with an absolute jaffer (0). Marnoch’s spell had now come to an end finishing with figures of 3 for 32 off 8.

Max and Dan Orchard were putting a lot of pressure on the Broxborne batsmen and it looked like Hertford had a chance of pulling the game back. Runs were not easy to come by which was frustrating the two at the middle. Jonny Underdown and Noah Osborne also had great starts to their spells but both Ferguson and Pegg had started to mount their attack, putting the bad balls away and exerting pressure on the bowlers. Dan Orchard came back on and took the key wicket of Ferguson (56) with a great catch by Max at extra cover. At this stage the game was over as Pegg (35*) and Hanley (8*) finished the job off for Broxborne with 5 wickets in hand.
