Hertford 1stXI’s 2018 season opened away to Bishop’s Stortford on a glorious sunny day with Cricketfield Lane looking equally splendid.

On what looked like a decent track but a slow outfield, Bishops Stortford won the toss and decided to bat.

Ballard and Hussain started solidly and soon got the scoreboard ticking over for BS but never managed to get fully-away from Hertford. After opening bowler Slater was replaced by Campbell things started to heat-up, a short ball to Hussain meant that the batsman was forced to retire hurt and soon after that Campbell bowled Ballard. The scoring rate became stagnant as the other opening bowler Knight finished an excellent spell and the good work was continued by Leather and Campbell whilst the batsman struggled to get going.

When J. Leather removed the captain Chatfield for 14 it left BS on 109-2, however with the introduction of the Hertford spinners wickets soon started to tumble as the early pressure started to pay-off. Cavener and Ruskin bowled excellently and removed most of the middle-order, R. Hussain was unable to find anyone to form a considerable partnership and was eventually out 63 as BS limped to 209-9 off heir 50 overs. Cavener finished the innings with 3 wickets, Ruskin and Campbell with 2 each.

Hertford’s innings got off to a poor start when R. Leather was bowled in the second over but Ray and Pavey were able to steady the ship and put on 60 for the 2nd wicket. When Ray was removed by Lindop for 25, Pavey (40) and Campbell (13) crept the score up to 90 but both fell in quick succession. Despite a useful knock from Leather (16) he also came and went and so Hertford now found themselves in a tricky situation at 115-5.

However, this brought Cowell and King together who soon found their feet and began to cut into the deficit with some sharp running and good shot selection taking Hertford back into a winning position. One huge over producing 28 runs meant that Hertford won with just under 5 overs to spare and Cowell and King finishing unbeaten on 50* and 41* respectively after an excellent 95 run partnership.
